How DO Molecules Store Energy?
Chemistry text books say molecules like glucose store energy in bonds. Are they wrong? What even is chemical energy anyway? And what ARE chemical bonds? And are they JUST abstract concepts? Are Derek Muller from @veritasium and Nick Lucid from @scienceasylum correct when they say bonds don’t store energy? We look at the science and chemistry of molecular energy and answer the question: Where do molecules store their energy?

What IS activation energy, really?
Просмотров 26 тыс.3 месяца назад
What is activation energy in chemistry? Where does it come from and why is it so important? Using 3D animations, we look at what gives reactions a high or low activation energy and why it is so important to reaction rates. Along the way, we look at examples, like the science of explosives and rocket fuels. Kyushu University is one of Japan’s top universities. Check out the link to learn about o...
How Do Chemical Reactions REALLY Happen?
Просмотров 49 тыс.5 месяцев назад
How do chemical reactions actually take place and what is chemical kinetics? With animations, we look at the chemistry and science of how reactions work, including: the exact moment two molecules meet, the kinetic theory of gases, why kinetics is all about probabilities, what the differences are between gas- and solution-phase reactions, and why solid phase reactions are so different (hint: it’...

What is molecular orbital theory and how does it work? Are you confused about frontier orbitals, HOMO and LUMOs? These essential concepts in chemistry and science are explained with examples and 3D animations. As an aerospace engineering student, I am note disappointed in Beryllium a single bit. If it wasn't for its rarity and toxicity, it would be dope to use it, as it has one of the best mechanical properties while being extremely light.

Except beryllium is 10 times stronger than steel and only 1/3 the weight of aluminum. It's used in military and space guidance systems...(gyroscope and other things that need to be strong and light) the machining is done completely submerged in liquid coolant. Last I checked block of beryllium the size of a grapefruit is about $10,000 usd. It is really strange to handle its so light and strong. Doesn't seem possible.

Multiple problems with H2 eg stored compressed at 700 Bar , compressed liquid at ~ -250 C , leakage with explosive potential , cost of tank storage , inefficient conversion to electricity ~ 35% at best vs ~80 for batteries - require practical solutions that are readily available and affordable . Not yet .? Hype

So the formation of molecules and their bonds from atoms both sheds and stores energy, and entropy leads to the formation of molecules rather than the separation of atoms. Couldn't say I had really grasped that before. I'm assuming this high-energy, purely atomic scenario at the beginning of Veritasium's argument is like a one-time deal that only exists in stars or immediately after a supernova, and that planets and everything on them exist entirely within a molecular framework - do I have this right?
